Acrylics & Glass

Acrylics and Glass are
laser engraved producing a frosted image. This provides a very elegant looking image. Laser engraving has an advantage of versatility in that even photographs can be etched into acrylic and glass items, which is an excellent way to preserve a lasting memory. Another option, particularly for glass items, is to have them sand carved. Sand carving provides a depth to the image that signifies permanence and quality. On mirrors, sand carving is the best way to provide an elegant, classically beautiful image. This is especially true for mirrors that are used as wedding or anniversary gifts. Our trained and experienced staff is always available to advise you on what method is best for your project.

Plaques

Plaques can be engraved in a variety of ways. The most common is
diamond stylus engraving which carves the lettering and logo's into a metal plate, usually aluminum or brass, which is then placed on the plaque board. Many colors of metal are available. Click here to see our selection. Another method is to laser engrave on the plate material, which provides more versatility in the types of fonts used and the types of logo's which can be successfully reproduced. Plaques can also be laser engraved directly on the plaque board. This is especially effective on lighter colored woods such as Maple, but darker woods such as Walnut can be used. Sometimes a color fill is added to laser engraving on darker woods to improve the contrast, or just to add color. Another color option involves using colored mylar or vinyl as a "fill" for an image, and laser engraving the outlines. The resulting image from laser engraving on wood has a dark "burnt in" look which denotes permanence and lasting beauty. Again, even photographs can be laser etched into wood. Yet another option for plaques is sublimation. In this process, an image is baked into the plaque metal using special toners. This works well on both Gold and Silver colored plaque metal and is excellent for reproducing logo's, and using team colors on a plaque. White plaque metal can also be sublimated, which is excellent for reproducing photographs and more complex artworks. With so many options, a little confusion is understandable. Our trained and experienced staff is always available to advise you on what method is best for your project.

Trophies

The most common way to personalize a trophy is with
diamond stylus engraving on a metal plate which is then affixed to the trophy. Click here to see our selection of plate colors. Diamond stylus engraving carves the lettering into the metal, producing a look of permanence and lasting achievement. Logo's are often reproduced using laser engraving. Another option is to sublimate the trophy plate. This option allows you a greater selection of fonts to use. Basically, almost any font that can be used on a computer can be sublimated. We have a wide selection available. It also allows you to use a color team logo for example, or to have the text color coordinated with the color of the award, or the principal color used to identify your company or organization. Sublimation is also an excellent way to provide a high contrast, easily visible image on Gold and Silver trophy plate. Our trained and experienced staff is always available to advise you on what method is best for your project.

Medals

Medals are generally
diamond stylus engraved with your message on the back. Diamond stylus engraving carves the lettering into the medal for a look of permanence. Some medals have areas on the front which can also be engraved with shorter text elements such as the year or an age classification etc... . Our generic medals can also be customized by using either a stock mylar insert disc on the front, or we can create a custom one for you in metal. These are usually sublimated and most commonly include the logo of the organization or event, the name of the organization or event, and the year. The image can be a single color such as black on a gold, silver or bronze insert disc which is most common, or you can incorporate other colors, particularly on gold and silver discs or on white discs. White medal insert discs are often used when a full color logo is needed. Also, any of our medals can be turned into a gift item by adding a key fob. Our trained and experienced staff is always available to advise you on what method is best for your project.

Nametags

Nametags can be done in a variety of ways. One of the most common and versatile is
sublimation. Done on gold or silver aluminum, sublimation allows the incorporation of full color logos, and provides a high contrast, visible image of both logo's and text. Another option for nametags is plastic lamacoid. This multi-layer material incorporates a thin cap layer with a contrasting core layer. The cap is removed to reveal the image of logo's and text in the contrasting core color. Click here to see some of the colors available. An option for adding other colors to a lamacoid nametag is to have the logo and/or some standardized text hot foil stamped onto the tag. This way, your logo would stand out in a contrasting color to the core of the tag, which would provide the color for the name and position of the wearer. Our trained and experienced staff is always available to advise you on what method is best for your project.

Pens

Pens can be engraved either by
diamond stylus, or by laser engraving. In the case of gold or silver colored pens, diamond stylus engraving is the recommended approach. Colored metal pens can often be laser engraved to reveal the metal underneath the color. Wood pens are always laser engraved to provide a dark "burnt in" image.

Signage

There are a number of options available for creating signage. One of the most common is plastic lamacoid. This multi-layer material incorporates a thin cap layer with a contrasting core layer. The cap is removed to reveal the image of logo's and text in the contrasting core color.
Click here to see some of the colors available. This is commonly used for door signs, desk name plates, directory signs, donor walls, and a whole host of other signage needs. Some of these materials are even designed for outdoor applications. At North Star, we laser engrave many of these signs, which gives us greater versatility in using logo's and a wider variety of fonts than typically found elsewhere. It also gives us the option of creating tactile signage for applications where accommodating the visually impaired is a must. Another option for signage is wood. This can be laser engraved, providing dark text on lighter colored woods, or thin laminates can be laser cut and applied to a wooden sign, providing both a contrasting image and a tactile feel of depth. Yet another option is sublimation. This lets us incorporate a wide variety of colors and images into signage. The combination of a sublimated sign insert with an architectural sign holder can provide a high value classic look of elegance, with modern color graphics and imagery.

Ribbons and Rosettes

A traditional way to recognize "Best in Show" or participation in a large event, ribbons and rosettes are a versatile item available from North Star Trophies. Ribbons and rosettes are marked using a
hot foil stamp process where a die is heated and then used to seal the colored foil to the ribbon surface. A wide variety of colors of foil and ribbon are available, although gold foil is the most common. In the case of rosettes, further customization can be achieved by adding a custom printed insert for the button on larger orders, or by using a custom sublimated disc for smaller quantities.

Giftware

The way in which giftware is personalized depends on the type of item that is being marked. Knives for example are commonly
laser engraved on the handles. Another popular option is laser engraving a knife on the blade by using a special chemical that creates a charcoal image on stainless steel when laser engraved. The same process is used to personalize small quantities of stainless steel travel mugs which is a very popular item. Often times an item such as a picture frame will have an area that is designed for diamond stylus engraving. Our trained and experienced staff is always available to advise you on what method is best for your project.

Diamond Stylus Engraving

Diamond stylus engraving is really just like it sounds. A diamond tipped stylus is used to carve lettering and logo's into the surface of the engraveable item or metal plate. This creates a look of lasting permanence that many people find appealing. A similar process is diamond tipped burnishing. In this process a high speed rotating diamond stylus is used to mark the item. While not as deep as diamond stylus engraving, burnishing provides a smoother overall look to the lettering and logo's which many people like. Feel free to ask our staff which option is best for you.

Sublimation

Sublimation is a highly versatile way of personalizing an item. Sublimation provides a high contrast, easily visible image, with the option of using many colors. In this process, an image is baked into metal using special toners. This works well on both Gold and Silver colored metal and is excellent for reproducing logo's, and using team colors. White metal can also be sublimated, which is excellent for reproducing photographs and more complex artworks. One of the most common is black imprinting on a gold or silver plate, but you could have blue, green, brown, red, and various shades of these colors as well. Sublimation on white metal is great for full color images such as photographs. Sublimation is not just restricted to plaque/trophy metal either. Several products are available that are designed to accept sublimation. Coffee mugs and ceramic plates are most common. Other options include coasters and mouse pads, clipboards, nametags, bag tags, decorative license plates, T-shirts and several others. Sublimation is also highly versatile when used for indoor signage.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is one of the most versatile ways of personalizing an item. On wood, it provides a dark "burnt in" look. On acrylic and glass, a frosted image. This is an elegant way to recognize the accomplishment of someone special. Photographs that are laser engraved onto acrylic can be particularly stunning. In signage or on name tags it is used to remove the cap layer from plastic lamacoid to reveal the contrasting core layer underneath. The laser can also be used to cut custom shapes out of wood, plastic and acrylic. On stainless steel, a special chemical can be applied so that the laser engraver produces a dark charcoal image, which is very popular on stainless steel travel mugs, hunting knives, steins, multi-tools and even some signage. This process can also be used to mark tools, or to barcode items for security. On trophy and plaque metal it provides a greater selection of fonts than other forms of engraving and much more versatility when it comes to reproducing logo's. On anodized aluminum, laser engraving is excellent for outdoor durable text and images, as well as producing photographs which are similar to actual black and white photo's in quality, but much more durable.

Hot Foil Stamping

Hot foil stamping involves using a heated die, (usually 400 - 500 degrees) to seal a foil marking material to a substrate in the pattern of your text or logo. This process is commonly used in nametags and for ribbons and rosettes. A variety of colors of foil are available. This process is especially useful and economic when text or images are being repeated on a larger number of items.
